People of God

The people of God are essential, no one walks with Jesus alone.

What’s up Valley Creek Students and welcome to Student Circles!!! For the past few weeks we have been discussing the Essentials – what we really need in life. When we read through scripture there are 5 things that God calls Essential, The Grace of God, the Spirit of God, the Word of God, the People of God and the Mission of God. And as we continue, keep asking yourself, am I building my life around these things.

This weekend we specifically discussed how the People of God are ESSENTIAL in our lives. If you haven’t been joining us online you can start by jumping in with us this weekend.

I think one of the big questions right now is this; Do we really believe that the people of God are essential? Now I know we can be busy with our teammates, connected to classmates, and friends we just hangout with from time to time. And while those ARE people, are they God’s people.. are they the ESSENTIAL relationships? Maybe some of them are, maybe some of them are not.. let’s unpack that.

If the people of God are ESSENTIAL to our lives, who are they ??? We are talking about The children of God, saints, the family of God, the church of God, destiny releasers, other loved sons and daughters of God, those who are following Jesus.

And when we say ESSENTIAL, that means it’s absolutely necessary if you’re going to flourish in life.

You see in Genesis when God created everything and said that it was good, even in a perfect world, there was one thing that was not good.. and that was for man to be alone. When God created Adam, apart from God, he was alone. He had the other ESSENTIALS, but there were no People of God yet.. then God created Eve and the human race began. It wasn’t good for Adam and it’s not good for us either. We were designed for community, but more specifically community with The People Of God.

Look at Jesus in the New Testament …

Jesus built his disciples.. he didn’t just get “a” disciple, but he built a community and put them in circles.. he spoke to thousands and loved the whole world, but only walked with the essential people of God, His disciples

At first it was just Peter and Jesus, and everything was great. Can you imagine.. just me and Jesus. And I think that’s often how we actually think about it… but then later it’s Peter, Jesus & the whole crew.. imagine how Peter might have felt like “I thought it was just you & me Jesus.”

But Jesus probably would’ve said something like, “if you’re going to follow me you gotta walk with THEM too. “

Check out this verse in Mark…

Mark 3:13-14 NLT
“Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him. Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach,”
Mark 3:13-14 NLT

And that’s the thing…

(((( The People of God Are Essential Because No One Follows Jesus Alone ))))

I’ll say it again so you can put it in your notes

The People of God Are Essential Because No One Follows Jesus Alone

You need people in your life but more than that you need the People of God in your life.

Think about it for a minute, where’s Jesus always going? To other people.. because they are essential to life.
Being with the people of God is one of the primary ways God shapes us into the image and likeness of Jesus

Look at Proverbs

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Proverbs 27:17 NLT

· Sometimes we don’t like that because sharpening requires friction, but it makes us better. It keeps us Jesus focused.
· So who’s SHARPENING you ? Who’s asking about your heart? Who’s prophesying over you? Who’s believing the best about you & helping you walk with Jesus.
· Maybe the reason some of us feel numb to the world is because we don’t have people sharpening us, we are missing the people of God in our lives.

Here’s another one

“Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.”
Proverbs 13:20 NLT

Or how about this one..

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NLT

· who’s picking you back up in this season ??? Because let’s be real, 2020 has been a year when we really could’ve used some help getting back up am I right?

I think one of the temptations right now is to just hope everything goes back to normal and we go back to all of our old relationships & old friendships…

but Statistically you will become like the 5 people you hang out with the most…

So.. maybe one of the greatest gifts of this season is the opportunity it’s given us to break away from non-essential relationships in order to grow with the People Of God. He’s made space for you to do just that. And I know at first all of us were disappointed and frustrated and maybe you still are. But what if we saw all of these things as a gift that would allow us to step into everything God has for us?

See every week now we come to our Circles on campus.

A Circle is an experience where we discuss the weekend message, engage the Scriptures, and pray together.

We get to start learning what it means to be with The People of God. And man it has been powerful! Some of the conversations that have been happening are transforming our hearts. It’s changing our lives … and why is that?

All those verses we read earlier about iron sharpening iron and two being better than one – who’s sharpening you? Who’s picking you up? Because that’s what happens in a circle.

And the relationships we build here in this season will be the ones that help us outside the circle experience when life hits us.

((( The people of God are essential because no one follows Jesus alone. )))

And finally…
What if it’s not just for you? What if it’s for them more than it is for you?

In fact what if right now you start to think of 3 names who need to be in circles. 3 names who need the People of God in their own lives?

As we begin to see the people of God as a higher value in our lives, as ESSENTIAL, we live more and more set apart, and it’s for the good of more and more people…

and on top of that, it brings more and more glory to God. It puts God on display for the whole world to see.

John 17:22 NLT says

“I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one.”

– as we begin to do life with the people of God, it puts Him on display for the world to see His goodness.
See when we started this year God gave us a word and that word was Set Apart – for the good of others .. glory of God. We are Set Apart WITH The People Of God for the good of others… it’s together that we become this movement of hope.

What you might not have pieced together yet is this.. the People of God are Essential because they have already received and are receiving the Grace of God, they walk in the Spirit of God and Know and engage the Word of God, so when you interact with them, you interact with Jesus.. you start to become shaped by them, and you start to look like Jesus, you start to truly live free. and hope begins to Flow out of your life in every area you step into.. you wanna become A Hope Carrier… start doing life with the People Of God.

So have you prioritized the People of God as Essential in your life yet? Because it changes you and it matters.. it’s essential

As we wrap up, I’m inviting you to ask God for those 3 names of people who need to be here with you in circles .. 3 people you can invite to be here next week with you..

And let the Grace of God, The Spirit of God, the Word of God and the People of God draw you closer to Jesus as we continue to be a movement of HOPE together!

Remember The people of God are ESSENTIAL because no one follows Jesus alone.
